After a surprising setback against the Austrians (2:3 loss after a shootout), the Slovakian hockey team needs to work hard in the battle to reach the quarter-finals. They will play their fourth game at the World Championship against the favourite France, a team they have been playing for a long time.

Slovakia’s performance in the north of Europe has been lacklustre. After an opening 0:5 debacle with home team Sweden, they beat newcomer Slovenia 3:1. After that, our eastern neighbours took only a point against Austria, against whom they made up a two-goal deficit, and finally earned at least a draw.

The Slovaks were predicted to be in a tug-of-war with Latvia for the fourth place in Group A. So far, they are two points behind the Baltic country in fifth place. But there is no need to hang our heads, there are still plenty of points in play and a mutual encounter that may well decide the game.

Slovakia now needs to beat France, who fell to Latvia 1:4. The Gallic Roosters last suffered a 0:5 debacle against Canada. Their only point, and it has to be said an unexpected one, came against Finland. Still, it had a bittersweet taste, a 3:4 defeat after extra time came after the Finns managed to equalize from 1:3 in the final game without a goalkeeper.

What to bet on:

Slovakia can go into the fight with the French confident. They have beaten their opponents in the last seven games in normal time, and always by at least two goals. The two national teams also played each other in May as part of the pre-Championship preparation. Slovakia won 4:2 and even 8:1 in the dress rehearsal. Given the importance of the clash, we expect it to win the handicap today as well.
