Denmark and Hungary will face each other on the eighth playing day of the Ice Hockey World Championship. Both teams will go into the clash with three points as neighbours in the table, but the favourite is clearly defined.

It will be the Danes, and not just because of the home advantage in Herning. The co-host of the championship paid the price for a deadly draw at the start of the tournament, which successively put the United States (0:5), Switzerland (2:5) and the Czech Republic (2:7) – the three biggest favourites in Group B. On Wednesday, the Swedish coach Gath’s charges started their chase. They beat Kazakhstan 5:1 and are even more favoured against Hungary.

Hungary is a newcomer to the event. All previous appearances among the elite have ended in immediate relegation, so the goal is clear – to finally hold on. It could be done, for example, at the expense of Kazakhstan, which it defeated 4:2. Along with them, however, Hungary has the least productive offense and the most leaky defense in Group B, having scored six goals in a row against Germany (1:6), the USA (0:6) and the Czech Republic (1:6).

The two national teams played each other at the end of April in a preparatory double-header. First the Danes won 6:2, but a day later the Hungarians celebrated a surprising 4:2 triumph.

If Denmark wants to continue to nurture the dream of reaching the quarter-finals, they need to score at full strength. They should have the upper hand on the ice not only because of the home environment but also because of the day off. Hungary will go into the game roughly 18 hours after finishing a tough encounter with the Czech Republic.
