For almost an hour, Real kept the star strikers of the Parisians at bay, but a moment of inattention was enough and the strongest defence of the basic groups capitulated twice. Goals from Mbappé and Barcola gave PSG a two-goal lead before the rematch in San Sebastian.

The Basques must win by at least two goals to force extra time. They last won at their own stadium in November, and since then they have waited seven games to win. Of their last nine games, they have won only once right after the defeat in Paris, losing 2-3 in Sevilla on Saturday with a much reduced squad. Although some absentees could recover in the meantime, Real will be weakened again and, as in Paris, will miss key defender Elustondo. Imanol Alguacil spared several mainstays (Merino, Le Normand, Traore, Oyarzabal, Kubo) over the weekend to throw all his strength against PSG.

Even though the visitors brought a favorable result to the Iberian Peninsula, there is no peace at the club. PSG drew for the second time in a row in Ligue 1 and after the goalless draw in Monaco, the most talked about name was Kylian Mbappé, whose coach Luis Enrique withdrew at half-time with the later addendum that the team had to get used to a future without the star striker, thus defacto confirming rumours of his summer departure. After his substitution, the team’s performance picked up, but it wasn’t enough to win and the Parisians had goalkeeper Donnarumma to thank for the point. However, if PSG want to think about success in the Champions League, they will need Mbappé, he doesn’t need extra motivation in the millionaire competition anyway.

What to bet on:

Real have to bet on the offensive card, but they also have to watch out for the back door, which has been left wide open in recent games, and that will give PSG’s speedy strikers, led by Mbappé, chances to break. It is thus quite likely that more than two goals will be scored in the rematch. Both teams could be in with a chance.
