Our pick: San Jose: handicap +2

15.03.2024 00:07

San Jose is the epitome of misery this season, with only 39 points they are currently the worst team in the NHL. But every now and then they manage to get a decent result because their opponent simply underestimates them. The last time they lost in Philadelphia by only one goal 2:3, before that they won in Ottawa 2:1. Tonight, they’re up against a team that’s in disarray.

Meanwhile, captain Sidney Crosby is having a hard time accepting that the team traded his court winger and good friend Jake Guentzel at the recent trade deadline. 18 years into his NHL career, he was used to the Penguins making strides toward the playoffs, moving forward, having a winning mentality. This year, for the first time, they sold, and for a club icon, it’s something he hasn’t come to terms with. And neither has the rest of the team, which is a reflection of him in the mirror. Pittsburgh has lost its last 4 games by a combined score of 2-17. It’s an unreal and sad affair.

True, they might just catch on to a team like San Jose. But the Sharks have a couple of things that make it more problematic. First, they have a power play in full swing. They’ve converted on seven of seven opportunities in their last four games. They also have a shooting success rate of 12 percent, fifth best in the month of March. Pittsburgh is last at 3.5 percent.

What to bet on:

We’re not saying that the Sharks should win, although even that is quite realistic in Pittsburgh’s situation. But it’s not going to be a great ride for the home team tonight, so San Jose could get a result that won’t be an embarrassment. The two-goal plus handicap is safe and still at a good rate.

Confidence: 7/10
