Since the win over the Rangers, Winnipeg has completely lost game structure. It didn’t have it against the Islanders, it didn’t have it against the Devils, and it didn’t have it against Washington last time out. Whether Gabriel Vilardi’s injury is behind it is questionable, but at the moment the Jets are treading water. Maybe they’ll see it against Edmonton, another team that’s had a game off right now. The Oilers lost in both Toronto and Ottawa over the weekend, though they were clearly better in both games, but ran into some great goaltending.

Tonight’s game will be critical for the Jets. They’ve been toothless in both directions in the last four. They have averaged 27:35 shots on goal (Edmonton has it backwards at 37:25). They have only a 43 percent dangerous shot percentage and 46 percent expected goals. That’s desperately low. They have tragic shorthanded and power play opportunities. They have a lot of pots on the stove and one always overflows. They can lean on their fantastic goalie Connor Hellebuyck, but they need to get other things back.

They’ll certainly start on defense today, but the Oilers will be hungry and will add gas after two losses, especially since they outplayed both Toronto and Ottawa.

What to bet on:

Expect an improved performance from Winnipeg on the back end, but it won’t be enough against the offensively strong Oilers.
