Spain’s Jaume Munar crashed out of the tournament in Marrakech in the eighth round, but he didn’t spare any effort and moved on to Monte Carlo, where he made it through two rounds of qualifying this weekend and will now play the main event of the inaugural clay Masters. The Spanish clay player had already completed a tour of the South American tournaments played on clay in February and made it to the quarter-finals in Cordoba and Santiago. His form on brick and gravel this season has been more than respectable.

In the opening round in Monte Carlo, Munar takes on Roman Safiullin, about whom much can be said, but certainly not that he seeks out clay tournaments. He plays on this surface more out of compulsion, now with better, now with worse results.

Safiullin is primarily a concrete player and seeks out hard surface tournaments more. That will be his main weakness in his match against Munar on Monday. And since he hasn’t been doing well on his favourite surface this year and is in poor form (he has won only two matches and lost seven since the semi-finals in Brisbane), he doesn’t have the best prospects ahead of him.

What to bet on:

The Spaniard Munar is a clay court player, which he proved by playing in European indoor tournaments instead of saving money for long-distance travel, so he pendulated around events in South America. Safiullin, who is in poor form, will be no match for him in the opening round in Monte Carlo. A lower handicap might be advisable.
