Karolina Pliskova had a tremendously strong February. She won the tournament in Cluj, then reached the semifinals in Doha and the eighth round in Dubai. She showed with her performance that at 32 years old it is still not good to write her off, even though she did not play ideal tennis in the previous months. Subsequently, she finished in the first round at two major American tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, but by then she was showing signs of fatigue.

Now, after more than three weeks off, she’s back on the courts and will play on clay in Rouen, France this week. Although clay has never been the Czech player’s strongest surface, she received a rather nice draw for her first match on this surface this season. She will play against Polina Kudermetova, the 181st player in the world.

Twenty-year-old Kudermetova has been touring mainly ITF tournaments this season, or WTA 125 tournaments, which is the equivalent of men’s challengers. Compared to Pliskova, she has the advantage of having already played a clay tournament in Antalya, where she reached the quarterfinals, and a qualifier in Rouen this weekend.

What to bet on:

Qualitatively, you can’t compare Pliskova with Kudermetova too much. The only mentioned disadvantage of Pliskova in the clay court can play into the hands of the Russian player. However, Pliskova will be able to overcome this and fight her way to the eighth round, even if it won’t be the fastest match. I recommend adding the number of games played.
