Could it be that the luck has turned? Carolina lost the first three games of the series to the NY Rangers. Each time it was by one goal. It was decided in overtime. Even in Game 4, the Hurricanes got a horrible goal when a pass from the back of the net was knocked into the net by goalie Freddie Andersen, which fueled the theory that he’s a great goalie until things really get tough.

But Carolina eventually won the last game, deciding with three minutes left on the power play. Brady Skjei’s shot rattled the net on the first power play of 17 attempts.The Canes are clearly the better team in the series so far. They’ve won three of four games on expected goals. They’ve really been getting their legs kicked by special teams, but now the tables may be turning. Carolina is actually still playing like we know them. Incredibly fast, attacking. Players are in great shape.

And now they may have finally started to believe that the President’s Trophy winner, led by the incredible goalkeeper Igor Shestyorkin, can be beaten.

Carolina goes to New York with adrenaline pumping. The home team will still be in a slightly lulled state of being up 3-1 on the season and having room to make mistakes. The Hurricanes don’t. They’re still in immediate danger of dropping out. For the second year in a row, it would be in quick fashion in an otherwise even series (like with Florida last year). They give everything they have to start and score the first goal.
