Monday afternoon’s match in Group B of the Ice Hockey World Championship in Ostrava will be played by the national teams of Sweden and France.

The Swedes are going through the tournament like the proverbial knife through butter. The forty-four-year-old coach Sam Hallam’s charges are the only team to have a full number of points and are deservedly at the top of the table. Tre Kronor’s roster is brimming with players from overseas and it shows in their performances. Last time out, Sweden took a smooth 7-2 win over last year’s bronze medalists from Latvia.

Sweden itself has been waiting for a medal from the World Championships for six long years and the desire to finally get a big result is clearly evident. With only seven goals scored, the Scandinavians have the best defence. They are also playing with great gusto up front, as evidenced by the fact that they have managed to score in all fifteen periods played so far!

France, who have so far only won against the Polish newcomer, should be another easy bite for the overseas stars. They can no longer advance to the quarter-finals and are assured of salvation. It can play the superfavourites fair and square, which will bring big windows in the defensive ranks.
