Our tip: European Parliament elections 2024: turnout less than 34.01

For a long time the European Parliament elections looked like a clear-cut issue for ANO, but in recent weeks the tri-coalition Together has also entered the fray, although this is more of a tactical issue put on the air by related polling companies.

In any case, one thing is certain, the elections to the European Parliament are among the least popular in the Czech Republic, so we certainly cannot expect a turnout like in presidential or parliamentary elections. In 2019, the turnout for the EP stood at 28.72%, which is woefully low, although it was a dramatic improvement on 2014 (18.2%). This time around, there will not be another 10% increase; many parties are publicly critical of the EU and its actions, leaving voters confused about whether they should go to the polls, or fundamentally opposed to the EU, or not interested at all.

To this must be added the relatively mild campaign that has been going on in the Czech Republic, which has been completely drowned out by the success of the recent ice hockey world championships, where, on the contrary, ratings have been breaking records. The main voters going to the polls are the true believers in the parties, but there are not many of them and their numbers are falling every year. The largest group of voters will therefore be, with exaggeration, family members, acquaintances and friends of specific candidates who have a clear interest in this.

Celebrities or well-known names have the potential to attract voters, but there are not many of them. The mayors are so personally scrapped and discredited that they have reached for Danuša Nerudová, which is not a bad move at all, while other parties have nominated political structures that are heading to the EP for party merits, such as Klára Dostálová, rather than being able to appeal to any undecided voters or even voters of their own party.

What to bet on:

Voter turnout is up compared to the last European Parliament elections, but not by leaps and bounds, the selection of candidates is relatively weak, or rather, the same names are still on the top of the list that have not advanced Czech politics anywhere. Also, the campaign has not been strong enough to attract more voters and, with the exception of the Pirates, there is no pro-European party. Less than 34% of voters turn out.

Confidence:

6/10
