Slovenia and Denmark have qualified for the Euros from the same group and will face each other in the opening game. While the advancement of the northerners was expected, the Slovenians surprised and got the same number of points (22) as the Danes, who won the group thanks to a better record in their matches – they drew 1-1 in Ljubljana and beat them 2-1 in the home rematch.

For the Slovenes, it was one of two losses in their last 21 games, and they have a perfect record of four wins and one draw from five matches this year, topped off by a 2-0 win over Portugal in March. The mainstay of the team is Atlético’s goalkeeping stalwart Oblak and the attacking duo of Šporar, Šeško, who at just 21 years old is growing into a world-class cannonballer in Leipzig.

The midfield axis of Bijol (Udinese), Cerin (Panathinaikos) is solid, the problem may be the little depth at the fringe positions, where some have to play in positions that are not their own at their clubs.

Denmark has a compact squad. Kasper Schmeichel is still banging away in goal, seven players have been added by the Premier League, five by the Bundesliga, two each by Spain’s La Liga and Serie A, with only the French representative missing from the Top 5 European competitions.

The squad is orchestrated by Christian Eriksen, who is back at full strength after a heart attack at the domestic championship. The Danish dynamite plays direct and fast up top with frequent finishing. He clearly outshot the Slovenians 13:2 (8:1 on goal) in his home game, yet he scored once. The Danes didn’t keep a clean sheet in their two victorious games in June against the Swedes (2:1) and Norwegians (3:1), leaving windows at the back.
