The third tennis Grand Slam of the season – the famous Wimbledon – will start on Monday with eleven Czech representatives. Karolina Pliskova will be in action on the opening day. The lot has given her a dangerous opponent in the form of the hotly contested Diana Snajder.

Pliskova is a former world number one, but she will go to Wimbledon as the 46th player in the rankings. She has fond memories of the All England Club, where she was just one set away from a coveted Grand Slam title in the 2021 final against Australia’s Barty.

As far as this season is concerned, the thirty-two-year-old Czech triumphed at an indoor event in Cluj, Romania, in February. After a hectic move to Qatar, she subsequently reached the semi-finals of the 1000 in Doha. After that, her performance went downhill, but with the switch to grass, the native of Louny revived and played the final in rainy Nottingham two weeks ago. She fell in three sets to Britain’s Boulter. Then, in Birmingham, she failed to make it out of the first round against the American Dolehide as a huge favourite.

Twenty-year-old Shnaider improved her personal ranking by a full seventeen positions immediately before Wimbledon and is now world number thirty. The left-handed Russian dominated the grass pentathlon in Bad Homburg, Germany at the weekend. At the event, she beat former world number one Kerber of Germany and Spain’s number two Badosa. In the final, she also beat Croatia’s Vekić in three sets.

This is the third title for Shnaider this year. The versatility of the talented player, who is able to play well on all types of surfaces, is also evidenced by the February trophy from Hua Hin, Thailand (hard surface) and the May triumph in Paris (clay). He will make his Wimbledon debut in the main event.

What to bet on:

Pliskova’s performances have been very erratic in recent weeks. The Czech tennis player obviously has the necessary qualities to play on grass, but she is not able to help herself with her serve as much as she used to, when she was the “queen of aces” on the circuit. Moreover, fate has put in her way a very tricky opponent who is riding a winning streak and comes to London with more playing experience. Thus, Shnaider is rightly seen as the paper favourite and we have to agree with the bookies on this one.

Confidence:

7/10
