Sevilla have again resorted to a change of coach this summer. Quique Sánchez Flores was replaced by García Pimienta, who previously led Las Palmas. It was against this opponent that Sevilla faced in the opening round of the new season. For Pimienta, it was a spicy debut on the Sevilla bench and he took a point (2:2), which he could only be half satisfied with, as his charges led twice in the duel.

The exact same thing happened to Villarreal. The latter took the lead twice against a strong Atlético Madrid side, but even they had to settle for a point for a 2-2 draw. All four goals came in the first half.

Both of Friday’s opponents used to participate in the European Cups, but are missing this season. Sevilla are having a poor season, finishing last season in 14th place, their worst result since relegation to the second tier in 2000. This is also why they have strengthened massively over the summer (Lokonga, Iheanacho, Saúl Ñíguez, Ejuke, Agoumé) and will clearly want to fight for higher positions. Villarreal missed out on the cups by four points – they remain first below the line in eighth place – and even the Yellows would like to push their result a little further in the new season.

Both of last season’s games were very evenly matched. In Sevilla, the two rivals parted amicably (1-1), while in Villarreal the Yellows were happier by a goal (3-2). Five times in a row, when these two teams clashed, goals fell on both sides. Both Sevilla and Villarreal clearly have a better offense than defense, so it might not be a bad choice to bet on the continuation of the aforementioned series.
