The first round of this year’s extraliga will offer a repeat of last season’s thrilling playoff semifinal. There, the Ocelar players managed to turn the already almost lost series from 0:3 to 4:3 and then go on to another title. The overall balance of the last season’s games is better for the Prague team, who won seven games and lost four.

None of Sparta’s key players left over the summer, but big names arrived in the form of Tomáš Hyka, Dominik Mašín and the productive Finnish back Valtteri Kemiläinen. The Prague team failed in their last two Champions League games, falling 5:1 to Sheffield and 3:0 to Berlin. In the previous eight pre-season matches, Pavel Gross’ charges have not dropped a point. Sparta will probably miss the key trio of defensemen, Kempný, Mozík and Němeček, for the opening round.

As usual, Trinec tried to keep the core of the team together. The most significant departure is the transfer of Daniel Voženílek to Switzerland. Michal Teplý, who has not scored in only one of the eight preseason games, looks the best of the reinforcements. In their last game on Saturday, the Silesians beat Swiss Fribourg 7:3 at home, but the opponent arrived considerably weakened with less than three lines. Even with minimal lineup changes, it is clear that Trinec is not going to change its successful style of hockey this year.
