Our pick: Burel C. – Gauff C.: Gauff X./+17,5 gems

American Coco Gauff has had a not-so-successful North American tournament series. At the US Open she reached the eight finals, but defended her title, and in Cincinnati she finished in the second round and in Toronto in the eight finals. She did not defend a significant number of points from last season and dropped down the rankings to sixth.
So Gauff decided to have a minor reboot and took a couple of weeks off after the New York Grand Slam, which she will finish now in Beijing, China. She doesn’t have the easiest draw for the opening round, as she will face France’s Clara Burel. She did beat her in Indian Wells this year, but only after a three-set battle in the tiebreak of the final set.
However, it is also true that Burel’s fortunes stopped a bit after reaching the quarterfinals in Cleveland in the rehearsal for the US Open. She finished in the second round at the US Open and in the eighth round at the weaker event in Monastir. Then in Beijing she cruised to a three-set win in the opening round against Tamara Korpatsch.
What to bet on:
Gauff has been seeded directly into the second round, so she will go on court undefeated against Burel. She’ll take advantage of the Frenchwoman’s deteriorating form and beat her, but it could easily be a three-set match again. One can recommend a win for Gauff in combination with the number of games played. Even at the low end, the odds are quite nice.
Confidence:
7/10
