In his second NHL season, will Connor Bedard elevate Chicago to the level every Blackhawks fan wants? As the pre-season preparation has indicated, Chicago will likely flounder again this year and move more towards the bottom rungs of the Western Conference.

The team from Illinois may have managed to get stronger over the summer, but it is still a very young team that should own the future, not the present. However, if the Bedard-Taylor Hall interplay works and reinforcements TJ Brodie, Tyler Bertuzzi, Alec Martinez and Teuvo Teravainen perform well, it shouldn’t be a complete bust.

Chicago’s opponent in the first game will be Utah. Utah is a new organization, but a direct successor to the Arizona Coyotes, hence the full Arizona roster. So Utah has the advantage of not starting from scratch and has an interesting young roster that is slowly maturing to the point where they should be looking to make the playoffs.

Utah chose Clayton Keller as their captain, who was on a rampage for Arizona last season and was the team’s leading scorer and most productive player. Additionally, the defensive line was bolstered with the addition of Mikhail Sergachev and John Marino, which may be the imaginary X-factor.

What to bet on:

Chicago picked up one defeat after another in the preparation, which was not good for the team’s confidence at all. Moreover, the new season will take place on the ice of an opponent who will make his debut in front of a packed arena. Utah will take advantage of this and beat Bedard’s team.
