Our pick: Michelsen A. – De Minaur A.: more than 3.5 sets

Three of Monday’s four men’s matches at the Australian Open will have an American footprint. Twenty-year-old Alex Michelsen improved on last year’s tournament best by advancing to the eighth round and can look forward to a showdown with another paper and rankings favorite. He will challenge eighth seed Alex De Minaur in the “night session” in front of a packed Rod Laver court.

Michelsen is ranked 42nd in the world rankings. His maximum ranking is one position higher, but after the tournament he should move into at least the top four for the first time in his life. Everything will depend on the next results.

Given the draw, the American talent can already consider the eighth round a great success. In the opening round, he took on former world number three Greek Tsitsipas (12th). He then fulfilled the role of a favourite against the home team’s McCabe, only to shine in the third round with another scalp against a Top 20 opponent, Russian Khachanov (19th).

He now faces Alex De Minaur. The latter has had duels with huge odds outsiders in Melbourne, so it’s no surprise that he has handled the Dutch Van De Zandschulp (9.50), the American Boyer (14.50) and the Argentine F. Cerúndol (7.80), although he had to go to four sets with the latter. He advanced to the eight-finals for the fourth year in a row at his home Grand Slam and can look forward to a maiden appearance in the quarter-finals.

What to bet on:

De Minaur, as the eighth player in the rankings and a participant in the last Tournament of Champions, is rightly considered the favourite. The ever-improving Michelsen, on the other hand, will be his first ever tough test. Both tennis players have so far won nine out of ten sets played at Melbourne Park, with Michelsem, as an unseeded player, achieving this with paper stronger players. De Minaur then managed to beat him less than a year ago on the concrete in Los Cabos. So it’s hard to imagine that this eight-final should know the winner after just three sets.

Confidence:

8/10
