When Columbus and Buffalo played each other in mid-October at the start of the season, it was a shootout and the Blue Jackets won 6-4. While both teams were among the weakest teams in the Eastern Conference at the time, a few months later the situation is different.

The Sabres may have won three in a row, but that hasn’t helped them rise from last place in the conference yet. They are five points behind second-to-last Philadelphia at the tail end and are 12 points behind the relegation zone with 30 games left in the regular season. That’s not too big a loss at first glance, but given the instability of Buffalo’s performance, all indications are that this will be another season without a playoff run.

Columbus, on the other hand, has had a decent reboot since the Christmas break. It even flashed a streak of six straight wins in January and has won 13 of 18 games since December 24. As a result, they currently hold the second wild card position and are five points behind New Jersey in the Metropolitan Division, who hold the last direct promotion spot. In their last game, Columbus took on a strong Dallas team, but fell 3-5.

Buffalo managed to win its last three games against Boston, Nashville and New Jersey, but it has reached its limit. It hasn’t won four in a row yet this season, instead, each time a bad season has come after three wins. Columbus will start another such period, confirming their long-term form and winning, either in regulation time or overtime.
