Our pick: Alcaraz C. – Djokovic N.: winner Djokovic

While the women’s singles final at Wimbledon has a surprising cast, Sunday’s climax of the men’s competition will offer an expected and shattering replay of last year’s final, in which Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 after an epic five-set battle lasting 4 hours and 43 minutes to take the Grand Slam from him.
The Serb dominated the other three majors last year, missing only the Wimbledon trophy, which he had previously captured seven times. He has yet to win a Big Four tournament this year, something he has only done in the previous thirteen years, ending with elbow surgery in 2017. This year he had to undergo surgery on his knee (torn meniscus), which he injured at Roland Garros. But Djokovic made a lightning return and, with his knee bandaged, advanced to his tenth final of a grass grand slam.
Compared to Alcaraz, he also saved more energy, spending three hours less on court. In five duels, he lost only two sets in the second and third rounds, and had a bye in the quarterfinals after De Minaur withdrew. He dominated his last two matches against Rune and Musetti and lost his serve only twice in Friday’s semi-final.
The Spaniard worked up much more of a sweat on his way to the final. He beat Tiafoe in the 3rd round after a five-set battle, and lost a set in all three of the following matches, although he more or less controlled them in the second phase. Anyway, compared to last year’s run to the Wimbledon title, it is a noticeable difference, he lost only two sets a year ago when advancing to the finals and looked more sovereign.
Djokovic’s serve, which is crucial on grass, is more assured this year than Alcaraz. The difference is mainly in the first serve success rate (82% vs 72%). The Serb allowed his opponent only 14 break chances and lost serve nine times, while the Spaniard turned away 43 break points and lost serve 19 times.
What to bet on:
The bookmakers favour Alcaraz, but in the match-ups, Djokovic (3-2, sets 10-7, games 95-79) still has the slight edge and will be looking for his 25th major triumph at the All England Club on Sunday, which would surpass the all-time high of Australian Margaret Court. Given the odds, it’s worth betting on the Serb. The match is available at BetBuilder.
