Our tip: Argentina – Colombia: draw

15.07.2024 02:00

The oldest national team tournament will culminate in Miami with Argentina and Colombia meeting in the Copa América final for the first time in history. While Argentina will be playing for a record 16th title to break away from Uruguay at the top, Colombia will be aiming for a second gold.

The paper favourites are the reigning world champions, but they have failed to make the Copa finals in the new millennium. Of their four appearances, they won only the last one three years ago in Brazil, where they beat the Canaries thanks to a goal by Ángel Di María, who bids farewell to the national jersey with today’s final duel. This will be the fifth final for Lionel Messi, but the main figures of the team in this year’s tournament are four-goal Lautaro Martínez and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who kept four clean sheets in five matches and saved the penalty shootout in the quarter-final against Ecuador (1-1).

The Colombians will be led into the final by Argentine coach Néstor Lorenzo, who has made the team an unbeatable machine. Including Copa, Los Cafeteros have not lost 28 games in a row, most recently losing 0-1 to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier. Just like the Argentines, they defend excellently (2 goals conceded) and are also productive (12 goals), with captain James Rodríguez contributing an assist on half of the goals. In the semi-final against Uruguay (1-0), the Colombians managed to play the entire second half shorthanded without the suspended right-back Muñoz.

What to bet on:

Since 2011, the rivals have met four times at Copa, with three matches ending in draws (0:0, 0:0, 1:1) and the Colombians winning the remaining 2:0. A draw after 90 minutes is also likely in this year’s final. Then penalties will decide.

Confidence:

5/10
