The first tennis Grand Slam of the new season in Melbourne, Australia, breaks the established rules. For the first time in a long time, the number one seed will not be Swiatek of Poland, but Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.

The world number one has had a great season, in which she made perhaps the biggest progress of all and finished the season with a lifetime record (59/15). Sabalenka managed to win two Grand Slam tournaments straight, enjoying victories at the US Open and also the Australian Open, where she is therefore defending her title. The Belarusian can even attack a hat-trick, as she won in Australia in 2023.

The native of Minsk showed a steady performance in 2024, especially the fast surfaces suit her power game to the maximum. Her wins have given her confidence, plus she is at her best tennis age and has experience to spare. When you add to that the paper-easier draw and the other advantages that world leaders enjoy (courts, times, etc..), Aryna Sabalenka should realistically think about defending her title at the Australian Open 2025.

Iga Swiatek has also had a very good year, the Polish tennis player has even recorded 69 wins and only 12 defeats, however, apart from clay, she hasn’t done well at the big tournaments. In Australia, despite her magnificent career, she has not been in the final even once, and this time she will also be at a partial disadvantage against the “bangers”. The Pole can’t rely on her serve, her running skills are also a bit less important here.

On the other hand, Coco Gauff, who has also had an excellent season, must be counted on. Despite her younger age, she already has a Grand Slam title to her credit, and in 2024 she managed to conquer the Tournament of Champions. Overall, she recorded 50 wins in a season, which is a sign of extravagance and great stability of performance.

The last two finalists from Melbourne, China’s Zheng, who among other things played in the Champions Finals, and Yelena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, who was among the top two in 2023, can also have ambitions for the overall title.

Of the Czech tennis players, Karolína Muchová, who is in the top five according to the odds, is the most likely to succeed, followed by Wimbledon winner Barbora Krejčíková by a considerable margin. Markéta Vondroušová also has high expectations for the new season, but only if she is healthy. Linda Noskova is expected to make a performance shift, while Karolina Pliskova or Maria Bouzkova will be more in the numbers. Katerina Siniakova should shine in doubles.
