The preliminary round of the Extraliga playoffs starts on Wednesday. In one of the four three-game winning series, the favoured České Budějovice and Karlovy Vary will face each other and will try to surprise the favourite.

České Budějovice did not finish the regular season on a positive note, suffering a tough 2:7 debacle against Pardubice in the last round. Otherwise, they can be satisfied with the results of the last two weeks, as they managed to win three times in a row before this unpleasant defeat. Although the Energy players had a very good end of the regular season, beating Sparta 5:1 and Kladno 4:1, their performance in the previous weeks was dismal. This is the main reason why Karlovy Vary finished eleventh in the Extraliga table and have to play against the favoured Budějovice, who were sixth.

This trend will continue at the beginning of the series and Budějovice will take the lead.
