Despite an unconvincing performance, England go into the final round of Group C from first place. Slovenia are also in contention to progress to the next stage, on half of the four points.

England, who were tipped as the main gold medal contenders before the tournament started, started with a slender 1-0 win over Serbia. Albion then failed to fulfil their role as favourites with Denmark, with whom they only drew 1-1 after a dull performance. Coach Gareth Southgate’s team came under fire from the media, fans and former players.

The discerning English football public can be put to rest by a fair performance against Slovenia by the squad around Bayern canon Harry Kane. England only need a draw, or even Serbia’s loss to Denmark, to advance to the knockout stages. Therefore, we cannot expect a headless offensive spectacle, the reigning vice-champion, on the other hand, with its extreme quality, cannot have any other goal than advancing from the first place.

What to bet on:

In the last three European Championships, England have made the final group stage appearances without conceding a goal. That scenario is realistic with Slovenia, who probably won’t enjoy the ball too much. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has yet to concede a single goal, and that was after an almost millimetre shot against the bar. So a win and a clean sheet for England looks a likely option at nice odds.
