The Finns are doing rather embarrassingly at the ongoing Ice Hockey World Championship. The 2022 champions are outside the qualifying quartet in Group A. Thursday’s game against newcomer Slovenia should change that.

Suomi’s hockey team entered the tournament with a slim 2-1 win over Austria. They then averted a goalless draw with France, tying the game from 1:3 to 3:3 and then completing a turnaround early in overtime. Last time Finland lost 1:2 to Sweden in the Nordic derby.

Finland has some interesting individuals in their midfield. Forwards Tolvanen (Seattle) and Teravainen (Chicago) play in the elite line, while the other NHL quartet of Matinpalo (Ottawa), Leppanen (Edmonton), Hameenaho (New Jersey) and Parssinen (New York Rangers) play in the second line. Nashville defenseman Saros is the goaltender, and he caught 39 of 41 shots against the Swedes last time out.

The Slovenians had one goal before the tournament – to try to stay among the elite after advancing. So far, things aren’t looking too promising. The newcomer is without a single point, crouching in last place, having lost to Canada (0:4), Slovakia (1:3) and Latvia (2:5). The upcoming clashes with France and Austria will be key.

What to bet on:

The Finns desperately need points. They go into the game against Slovenia after a two-day recovery and will leave nothing to chance. The reigning Olympic champions will go for the win in the first period.
