Since about the beginning of February, that is, since she announced she would retire this season, Danielle Collins has been playing great. It’s as if the pressure of having to play for results has been lifted from her after announcing her intention, and she’s playing with a style that got her into the top ten in the world a few years ago. She will be playing her third quarter-final since February, having managed to build on her successes in Doha and Austin in Miami, where she was just inside the top eight.
Standing in the way of reaching her first semi-final of the season, and first since last September, is the 30-year-old American’s equally aged Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia. She managed to defeat Naomi Osaka and Cori Gauff in Miami, which were very valuable scalps for her, which will allow her to play in the quarterfinals for the first time this season.
The huge disadvantage for Garcia ahead of the quarterfinal duel, however, is that she can’t match Collins’ style. She faced the American player in 2019, 2022 and 2023 and lost in two sets on all occasions. Moreover, all the duels were played on concrete, as was the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami. This is also why Collins is the paper favourite for the clash, although she is a lower ranked player than Garcia.
What to bet on:
Collins has it in for Garcia. She’s beaten her when she played well, as well as in years when she wasn’t part of the wider world’s top players. Considering how well the American has played since announcing the end of her career, she has to be considered the favourite for the fourth match between them. So far she has always won in two sets, in the quarterfinals in Miami she will win with a difference of at least three games.
