The WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto, Canada will pit Beatriz Haddad Mai and Katie Boulter against each other in the second round. Although the former is the higher ranked player, the British player is the favourite to advance.

Haddad Mai has won a total of four singles tournament titles in 2022 and 2023. She was far from it the year before in Toronto, where she lost in the final. This year, however, the left-handed Brazilian’s performance is weaker. She has one semi-final from Abu Dhabi, but the world number 22 said goodbye to most of the events after her first or second appearance.

Boulter is having a breakthrough season. In early March, the Briton dominated the concrete pentathlon in San Diego, USA, and in mid-June she also conquered the home grass in Nottingham. This gave her her first glimpse of the top three in the rankings. She is currently ranked 33rd.

Both players had to go to three sets in the first round. Boulter defeated the American Pera in two hours 6:4, 3:6 and 6:1. It was Haddad Mai who spent almost three and a half hours on court with Maria Bouzkova. In a match full of mistakes, she finally outplayed the tenacious Czech 5:7, 6:2 and 7:6(1).

What to bet on:

Boulter is in better form than Haddad Mai this year. She has won 13 out of 17 matches on the hard surface since the beginning of the year, while her opponent was still in negative numbers until yesterday (currently 9/9). Moreover, the blonde Brit has already faced the South American twice this season, and each time it was a win for her on the fast surface. So there is no reason why she can’t do it a third time at nice odds.
