Karolína Muchová returned in style after a ten-month break caused by a wrist injury she suffered at the final Grand Slam of the season last year, winning all her matches 2-0. In the eighth round, she saw off top seed Jasmime Paolini, the finalist of the last two Grand Slams, twice 6-3.

Once again, the experts admire her full-court varied tennis, effective and efficient strokes – volleys, lobs, pivots, with which she takes her opponents out of the concept. In Karolina’s case, however, one must be wary, especially of her health, which has betrayed her several times at the least opportune moment.

Her next opponent will be Beatriz Haddad Maia, the first Brazilian in the quarterfinals of the US Open since 1968. The South American’s high point at Flushing Meadows so far has been the second round. She had a bit more work to do than Muchova to reach the quarterfinals, losing one set to Avanesian in the opening round and Wozniacki in the eighth.

Anyway, by reaching the quarterfinals, the Brazilian has entered waters she doesn’t often swim in. This is only her second time playing in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, while it is Muchova’s sixth time with a previous positive record of 3-2.

What to bet on:

Muchova is 3-0 in their matches, losing only one set in their last match last year in Cincinnati (6:7, 6:1, 6:4). In the quarterfinals of the US Open she will need two sets to win.
