Our pick: Italy – Tunisia: winning margin in the match/Italy by 1-5

The World Handball Championship, which is played in three countries, kicks off in Denmark with a match between Italy and Tunisia.

Italy has qualified for the championships for only the second time and the first time since 1997, when it finished 18th in Japan. Although Italy is not a classic handball country, the team from the Apennine Peninsula should not be underestimated.

Handball is on the rise in the country, with Italy knocking out Montenegro after two wins in the play-offs to qualify for the championships, and performing well in the current European qualifiers, in which they narrowly lost to Spain 30:31 and beat Serbia 31:30 at home. The quality of Italian players is also appreciated by clubs, with the best playing in elite competitions in Germany, France and Spain.

In January’s preparations for the championship, Italy beat Switzerland and Kosovo and lost to the Netherlands. Tunisia, on the other hand, had a bad dress rehearsal, losing to Japan, Austria and Poland. The team is nowhere near the quality of 2005, when it finished fourth at the home World Cup. Tunisia won the last African championship seven years ago and finished third at last year’s event.

At the past two World Cups, the President’s Cup, designed for teams eliminated after the regular group stage, was played for. Two years ago, the Tunisians failed to make it through a crucial match against Belgium. And now they’ll be missing a key offensive player, Mohamed Darmoul.

What to bet on:

The Italians are slight favourites in their opening match, which they will confirm by winning by a difference of one to five goals.

Confidence:

5/10
