Jiri Lehecka had to wait until Sunday to enter the ATP Masters tournament in Miami. However, there can be no doubt that a few extra days off, which he could spend at most on training and rest, will do him good in his long season. Rested, he can then take on the second round match during Sunday’s programme (he had a free draw in the opening round as the seeded player), in which he will face Australian Alexei Popyrin.

Lehecka will be the paper favourite, even considering his results from the previous Masters in Indian Wells, where he managed to make it through to the quarter-finals. On his way to this excellent result, he knocked out the home team’s Brandon Nakashima, world number six Andrey Rublyov and then another favourite Stefanos Tsitsipas. Lehecka was stopped only by Jannik Sinner, one of the best tennis players of this season and winner of the Australian Open.

Popyrin has been very sparing with his starts so far this season. He has only played in Brisbane, Melbourne (he finished in the 2nd round at both events) and Doha, where he managed to make it through to the semifinals, contrary to expectations. He took a month-long break, after which he returned to the courts in the first round in Miami, in which he took on Argentine Facundo Diaz Acosta in two sets. Twenty-four-year-old Popyrin is currently ranked 45th in the world.

What to bet on:

Although Lehecka will not have an easy time of it, she will make it to the third round. His huge advantage is that he has a tremendously strong first serve, which lately only the really best players in the world have found a recipe for (Sinner, Bublik and Hurkacz were Lehecek’s last defeats). Popyrin does not belong to this elite division of the ATP circuit.
