Our prediction: Lorient – Clermont: Each team will score – Yes
19.05.2024 21:00
In the final round of Ligue 1, penultimate Lorient and last Clermont will face off. While the home team still has a mathematical chance to save themselves, the visitors from the centre of France are already assured of relegation. This is also a clash between the teams with the statistically worst defence (Lorient) and the statistically least productive attack (Clermont).
The last defeat at the field of Marseille (1:3) was the seventh in a row for Lorient and it looks most likely that this unfavourable series will significantly contribute to the Breton club’s relegation to Ligue 2. Winter reinforcements such as seven-goal Mohammed Bamba, midfielder Imrân Louza and defenders Panos Katseris and Nathaniel Adjei may have brought a fresh wind to the team at the start of their tenure, but it only lasted a month, during which Lorient won four games (most recently in early March) – since then, coach Régis Le Bris’s charges have been waiting for a three-point win (0-1-8). In order for Lorient to still contend for staying in Ligue 1 in the barrage, they must win by as large a goal difference as possible while hoping that Méty get some more goals from Paris. In the event of a scoreless draw, the score will be decisive, and Lorient have seven goals worse than rivals Métés.
It is Clermont who are already facing what is surely their last first league game after three seasons among the French elite, given confidence by their last home defeat to Lyon (0-1). The biggest weakness of this year’s team of coach Pascal Gastien, who will retire after seven years in the team after the season, was clearly the offensive. If Clermont had not had the productive Muhammed Cham, who with twelve points (8+4) contributed to almost half of all the goals scored by the team this year, “Les Lanciers” would probably have left the top competition earlier. The whole team will go to Lorient to play for a commitment, because none of the players wants to voluntarily go down a level with their club.
What to bet on?
Lorient need to play to win and score as many goals as possible. From Clermont, on the other hand, all the pressure associated with relegation has fallen off and the game will be one to enjoy. Considering the penetrating defence of the home side “Les Merlus” and the fact that they are the ones who need to attack and score goals, I’ll go with the bet that both teams will score. In the case of the home team it could be the aforementioned Mohammed Bamba and for the visitors it could be Muhammed Cham, who is quite likely to move to a more famous club address after relegation.

7/10
