Czech tennis player Tomas Machac made his last appearance on the courts at the Masters in Miami. At the prestigious ATP 1000 event he had one of the tournaments of his life and won a sensational qualification to the quarterfinals. He took a well-deserved rest and skipped the tournaments in Marrakech and Monte Carlo. He will open the clay part of the season at the five-hundred in Barcelona.
On Tuesday, he will compete in the main event of this Spanish tournament against the 114th ranked player in the world, Juncheng Shang from China, a talented tennis player who is only 19 years old and who this year reached the semi-finals in Hong Kong and the third round of the Australian Open.
But clay is not exactly the favourite surface of this Chinese talent. This was confirmed a week ago at the Madrid Challenger, where he unexpectedly finished in the eighth round. In Barcelona, however, he managed to get through the qualification, even though he played against ranked and qualitatively inferior players. Machac is in a different league compared to them.
What to bet on:
Machac’s indisputable advantage is that he grew up on clay and although he has more success on concrete, he is a true all-rounder who doesn’t differentiate between surfaces. That will be key for Tuesday’s match. Machac will be able to handle the battle with Shang and make a successful start to the clay part of the season.
Confidence:
7/10
