The main attraction of Tuesday’s Champions League programme will undoubtedly be the clash between Manchester City and Real Madrid. The two big clubs will face each other in the knockout stage of the millionaire competition for the fourth year in a row – but this time much earlier, when they will face each other for a place in the eighth round.

Manchester battled for promotion to the top twenty-four until the very end of the league season. It only averted a blunder in its last game, when it beat Bruges 3-1 at home.

Real narrowly missed out on the elite eight, and therefore direct participation in the eighth round. Leverkusen – Lille – Aston Villa (the teams in 6th to 8th place) lost only one point to the “White Ballet”. All the more cruel for the club from the Spanish capital and the reigning Champions League winner is the fact that the lot has assigned to it the European champion of the previous year right from the start.

The two rivals are performing diametrically differently on the domestic scene. The Citizens are only fifth in the Premier League with an abysmal 15-point deficit to leaders Liverpool. Last time out they suffered a 1-5 debacle in the league against Arsenal, then struggled to progress by a goal in the FA Cup against third-tier Leyton Orient at the weekend.

Real Madrid have not won their last two games in La Liga. After a surprising 0-1 setback to Espanyol, they last drew 1-1 with Atlético in the derby. Even so, coach Ancelotti’s charges are still leading the table.

What to bet on:

Neither team is in optimal form. Real are slightly better, Manchester will have the home ground at their disposal. Since the playoffs are played with a two-match system, the first one may be more cautious. Four of the last five meetings between these two rivals in the Champions League have ended in a draw. There is no clear favourite this time either. Moreover, the odds for a draw in a double chance are very tempting.
