Only a miracle will help Bilbao to play the final of this year’s Europa League at their stadium. A week ago, they were given a tough k.o. and Manchester United took a 3-0 aggregate lead to Old Trafford.

The Europa League is the only competition where the Red Devils have done well. At the weekend, they lost 3-4 at Brentford in the Premier League and only averted a looming debacle with two goals in the final minutes. Anyway, Manchester are now focused on the Europa League.

Bilbao are fighting on two fronts, a goalless away draw with Real Sociedad in the Spanish league did not please Athletic as much as the 0-3 defeat in the opening Europa League semi-final. Bilbao were looking forward to the final at their home stadium and will certainly give it a go in Manchester, but apart from the three-goal deficit, the absence of key players is weighing on them.

The visitors are also missing both Williams brothers with top scorer Sancet injured. The home team also has a fairly large squad, but it has been with them all season and they are used to it.
