Twenty-eight-year-old Maximilian Marterer is completely out of shape in the first months of 2024. He has won only three of his nine matches and all of his wins have come in the qualifiers, which is why he is slowly slipping down the world rankings. In Dubai, he beat Yanki Erel of Turkey, a world No. 4 player, and an out-of-form Luca Van Assche, who was a lucky loser in the main event anyway.

In a not-so-good playing condition, he will face Australian Christopher O’Connell in the opening round of the main event, who has played the quarter-finals in Adelaide, the second round at the Australian Open and the eighth round last week in Doha, Qatar. Compared to the German player, the Aussie has been able to carve out really valuable wins in the matches he is supposed to win. And he has defied paper expectations on several occasions, taking the scalps of Alexander Shevchenko and Jan-Lennard Struff.

What to bet on:

Twenty-nine year old O’Connell is in decent form compared to Martero and has been putting in steady performances, which is why he is having a decidedly better season than his opponent. In Dubai, his only downside may be that Marterer has already played two matches and has been rusty. It was just against weaker players than O’Connell. The Aussie’s progression to the eighth round is on a ticker.
