Before this season, few would have guessed that one of the best tennis players would be Latvian Jelena Ostapenko. And indeed, the 26-year-old has already broken through to the ninth spot in the world rankings, having won 16 out of 19 matches played and celebrated titles in Adelaide and Linz. What is such a gem, then, is that all three of her defeats have come in matches against Victoria Azarenka, who has become something of a nemesis so far this season.

Ostapenko managed to defeat Si-Ju Wang and Lulu Sun at the ongoing 1000 in Dubai, advancing to the eighth round after a smooth 6-4, 6-3 victory. In the next round, she can play against world number 40 Anna Kalinskaya, who will be looking to avenge last year’s defeat in Adelaide.

Kalinska may have shone this year by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, but otherwise she is waiting for another significant result. Last week she crashed out in the first round against Karolina Pliskova and since the weekend she has been playing in Dubai, where she had to qualify. So she has four matches left in her legs.

What to bet on:

Ostapenko is in great form and is currently the fifth best player of the season according to the WTA Race rankings. She will confirm her form against Kalinskaya and advance to the quarterfinals.
