Pittsburgh unexpectedly still clawed their way into playoff contention late in the regular season, despite throwing in the towel by trading star scorer Jake Guentzel at the transfer deadline. But he’s still there, there’s still a group around Sidney Crosby that has managed to wring 16 points out of the last 10 games, the most in the Eastern Conference. With three days left in the regular season, the Penguins are just one point out of a playoff spot.

The Eastern Conference resembles a slug marathon. Teams like Philadelphia or Detroit, who were assured of a playoff spot a while ago, have been slow to advance and teams we thought were out of the picture like the Islanders or Pittsburgh have started breathing down their necks. For the Penguins, the chance is still there and coach Mike Sullivan is trying his best to play the goalie who was producing great results just 14 days ago – Alex Nedeljkovic.

He shined in early April against the Rangers and Washington and literally stole a few wins. But he looks tired. He’s caught 10 of the last 11 games. He got at least three goals in the previous three and seems to be running out of breath. He’s still in goal tonight against a strong Nashville team. He has the most shots on goal in the last eight days (average 36 per game) and a great power play (30 percent). He plays his last regular season game tonight and can’t finish any better than seventh (but he can still leapfrog Vegas).

Either way, he’ll start the playoffs on the road and get a strong first round opponent- either Dallas or Vancouver. He doesn’t quite have the motivation of the Penguins today, but he certainly won’t drop anything today with the crucial stage of the season knocking on the door.

What to bet on: Nashville is looking very good up front right now and tonight they’ll face a team that is playing an existential game, but their goalie is looking pretty tired. In addition, the Pens are not going shorthanded much right now and on the other hand, the power play has been working for Nashville. The visitors can score three or more goals today with ease.
