For the third time in a row, the match ended 1-0, after two victories for Portugal in the 2018 World Qualifiers, this time it was Denmark who were delighted with a narrow but deserved win in the 78th minute from Höjlund.

The hosts could have easily won by a higher margin, but the visitors were held by goalkeeper Costa, who made eight saves, including a penalty that was caught. Denmark played fast and direct football, which contrasted sharply with the slow and professorial football of Portugal, who, though they had possession of the ball more often, were little dangerous and produced only two shots on target. Once again, Cristiano Ronaldo proved to be the brake, getting the lowest mark of the losing team, yet he lumbered around the pitch incomprehensibly for the entire 90 minutes.

Portugal need to do much more in the rematch, it’s in their power. It will undoubtedly be more active at home, after all it beat Scotland 2-1, Croatia 2-1 and Poland 5-1 in the Nations League there. Denmark can’t resign itself to offensive action, one goal will hardly be enough to advance, but it is not nearly as strong and courageous away as in Copenhagen.
