Our pick: Rennes – Marseille: Each team will score – Yes

Some might say that the headliner of the round is the match between second-placed Brest and fourth-placed Lille, but I think an attractive duel between two offensive-minded teams from Rennes and Marseille promises an even better spectacle. Will this duel live up to the paper expectations and bring a higher number of goals?

Rennes had a fantastic game in Lille last round, where they scored in the first minute and even led by two goals in the 20th minute. In any case, “Les Rouges et Noirs” failed again and again to finish the game and for the third time in a row conceded the decisive goal in the last minutes! In the draw in Paris it was from a penalty, in the home clash with Lorient a goal conceded in the last minute decided the defeat in the regional derby, and a week ago Rennes missed the chance to move within a point of the sixth cup place and again only drew (2:2). Now at home, they welcome Marseille, who they faced here two months ago in the French Cup and were luckier on penalties after a 1-1 draw – this match was part of Rennes’ nine-match unbeaten run of competitive matches, which stretched until almost the middle of February!

However, a very different Marseille will now travel to Rennes than the one that played here in January. Under new coach Jean-Louis Gasset, the South Frenchmen won their third league game in a row last week as well, after a battling performance at home thanks to two more goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nantes (2-0), and they are only one point away from the sixth cup place before this round. On top of that, Marseille managed to advance to the Europa League quarter-finals over Villarreal on Thursday, where they were 0-3 down at one point, but Jonathan Clauss’ last-minute goal to make it 5-3 on aggregate in this double-header decided Marseille’s progression further. Coach Gasset needs to significantly improve his away results before the end of the season, as Marseille have only scored half the time in twelve league rounds and won only twice (2-4-6). In Rennes they did it almost exactly a year ago after a 1-0 result, will that result happen again on Sunday?

What to bet on?

Both teams are betting heavily on offense, which promises an attractive spectacle and goals that should fall on both sides. For the home side, the emphatic Arnaud Kalimuendo could score, while the unstoppable Aubameyang could score for the visitors from the south of France. Even a 2-2 draw would not be surprising.
