The Women’s 1,000 in Toronto will offer semifinal matches on Sunday night. Top-seeded Jessica Pegula and No. 3 seed Dajana Shnaider will step onto Centre Court as the second seeds.

According to the odds, the paper favourite for the clash is Pegula, currently the sixth player in the WTA rankings. The previous year’s tournament semifinalist has not lost a set in Canada. On the other hand, she also had an easier draw. The highest ranked opponent she encountered at the event was Karolina Pliskova, the 45th singles player in the world, in the opening round. She then faced compatriots Ashlyn Krueger and Peyton Stearns.

The daughter of a Buffalo billionaire won a grass-court event in Berlin in June. Since then, she hadn’t made it past the second round at any of the other tournaments before this week. She lost to Britain’s Raducanu or China’s Xin Yu Wang as a favorite. Then at the Olympics, she lost to Svitolina of Ukraine in the second round.

Twenty-year-old Shnaider is a rising star of Russian tennis. She has already won four tournament titles on the elite circuit this year and has climbed to 23rd in the rankings (she is currently one place lower), and is already assured of moving into the elite 20 for the first time in the new edition of the women’s rankings.

Compared to Pegula, Shnaider had a much tougher draw in Toronto. After wins over Britain’s Dart and Poland’s Frech, she conceded just five games to world number two Coco Gauff! Then she also surprised her compatriot Samsonova, the world number 13.

What to bet on:

The players will be playing each other for the first time. It will be the first tough test for Pegula, who has been vulnerable in recent weeks, in Toronto. Shnaiderova has been mowing down one seeded favourite after another and is certainly not without a chance against the American. She should take at least a set at nice odds.
