The Ostrava part of the hockey championship will be kicked off on Friday afternoon by our eastern and western neighbours – the national teams of Slovakia and Germany. And right from the start of the tournament, there could be plenty of goals to be scored.

The Slovaks, after two defeats against the Czech Republic (2:4 and 1:4), beat the newcomer from Poland 6:1 in the preparation. On Tuesday they lost 2:6 to the United States in Bratislava. Surprisingly, one of the most productive players of the past year, Oliver Okuliar, who recently even signed a rookie contract in the NHL, was out of the lineup.

On the other hand, the Slovakian jersey will be worn by the championship trio of Viliam Čacho, Marek Daňo and Libor Hudáček, in addition to seven players who have played overseas. The latter was the most productive player of the entire playoffs. Peter Čerešňák from Pardubice will also extend his season.

Germany has little reason for optimism before the start of the championship. It has had a contradictory preparation, during which it lost surprisingly to Austria and France in the last two weeks. Last time the Germans played a rematch with France, they beat their opponents after extra time despite the presence of overseas forwards Nico Sturm (San Jose) and John-Jason Peterka (Buffalo).

What to bet on:

The two teams clashed twice in preparation three weeks ago. Germany first won 7:3, then Slovakia retaliated with a 5:4 triumph after overtime. The two February showdowns were also rich in goals, with the Slovaks winning 5:2 and 4:3 after extra time. The Slovaks should easily have the upper hand this time as well. They can rely on the services of Juraj Safkovski (Montreal), Tomas Tatar (Seattle) and Milos Kelemen (Arizona) to help them score at least six goals.
