Utah’s defense fell apart early in the season. New Jersey signing John Marino will miss three to four more months, and key defenseman Sean Durzi, who signed a new contract over the summer and was paired with fellow power forward Mikhail Sergachev for the first few games of the season, had to have surgery on his right shoulder. Treatment time? Up to six months, so quite possibly an early end to the season.

Ever since Durzi went on the DL, the team’s performance has gone downhill rapidly. Utah was able to win the first three games (with Durzi in the lineup), but eventually lost three of four games (without Durzi). It’s obvious that his influence on the team’s play, where he was a valid member in transition to the offense in addition to a quality defense, is enormous.

Colorado will try to take advantage of Utah’s woes, as they have finally stabilized their performance after a horrendous start to the season. It has started to defend much better, the goaltending is no longer as abusive and the result is three wins in a row, which is a huge boost to the team’s confidence. The Avalanche will be looking for their fourth straight win against Utah.

What to bet on:

Colorado is finally getting into form and Utah, the successor to the Arizona Coyotes, will take it too. The visitors will win on Utah’s ice.
